Cet instrument lui permet, entre autres, de comprendre les m\u00e9canismes de d\u00e9faillance, les caract\u00e9ristiques des mat\u00e9riaux, l\u2019origine de la contamination, ainsi que la nature et le mode de rupture des pi\u00e8ces. L\u2019observation au microscope permet d\u2019observer des structures invisibles \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153il nu. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une m\u00e9thode de pr\u00e9l\u00e8vement appropri\u00e9e, un microscope optique permet de confirmer la pr\u00e9sence de suie et d\u2019analyser sa morphologie afin d\u2019en d\u00e9terminer l\u2019origine. Il est ainsi possible d\u2019identifier si la suie provient d\u2019un voisin, d\u2019un incendie externe (comme un feu d\u2019herbe ou un incendie de for\u00eat), ou de l\u2019usage excessif de chandelles de mauvaise qualit\u00e9. Le microscope \u00e9lectronique \u00e0 balayage, coupl\u00e9 \u00e0 un d\u00e9tecteur EDS, permet d\u2019analyser les dommages par l\u2019eau et d\u2019\u00e9tablir son origine.
